By Belize Live News Staff: In a continued effort to champion sustainable agriculture and boost rural job creation, Osmond Martinez, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, toured the Royal Mayan Shrimp Farm and the Banana Growers Association (BGA) on October 28, 2024. These visits underscored the government’s commitment to supporting agricultural innovation and tackling industry challenges.
At Royal Mayan Shrimp Farm, Minister Martinez observed the farm’s advanced aquaculture techniques designed to yield high-quality seafood for both domestic and international markets. The farm’s representatives shared their optimism about expanding into the Taiwan market by early 2025, with potential opportunities in Mexico as well. In line with its goals for growth, the shrimp farm highlighted the need for low-cost financing and sustainable energy solutions to combat soaring electricity costs, which are projected to reach BZ$600,000 annually. Integrating renewable energy was underscored as a vital step toward reducing operational costs and enhancing the farm’s international competitiveness.
The tour continued with a visit to the Banana Growers Association, where Minister Martinez praised the association’s efforts in market expansion, productivity, and local grower support. The BGA has faced challenges from rising production costs, primarily due to labor expenses and increasing demand for immigrant labor from neighboring Central American countries to meet operational needs.
Minister Martinez expressed the government’s commitment to working collaboratively with these agricultural sectors to foster sustainable growth and alleviate obstacles. “These visits reaffirm our dedication to enhancing Belize’s agricultural sector through supportive policies and innovation,” Minister Martinez stated, applauding both the shrimp farm and BGA for their contributions to Belize’s economy and rural workforce.
The Minister’s delegation included Mr. Andy Sutherland, Director General for Foreign Trade, along with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. These engagements highlight the vital role of the agro-productive sector in driving Belize’s economy toward resilience and sustainability.
