By Belize Live News Staff: In a unique display, former UDP Minister of Economic Development, Erwin Contreras, attended a Senate Special Select Committee meeting in casual attire — wearing shorts — after being brought in by police on a warrant. His appearance in shorts, typically prohibited in parliamentary chambers, stirred attention as Contreras took the seat briefly before making an abrupt exit.
Upon taking his seat without his attorney present, Contreras read a prepared statement, asserting that the matters at hand were sub judice, or pending before the court, thus preventing him from disclosing any details. “The matter… is sub judice and therefore prohibited from public disclosure,” he said, adding that his attorney had advised him not to respond to questions without legal representation.
Senate Chairlady Janelle Chanona attempted to clarify the requirements under the Legislative Assembly Ordinance and reminded Contreras of his obligations under the warrant. However, Contreras stood his ground, reiterating that he would not participate without his attorney. Moments later, he left the meeting without further comment.
