Chief Transport Officer pushes for stricter regulations to combat motorcycle deaths

By Belize Live News Staff:  With motorcycle accidents on the rise in Belize, particularly among young people, questions are being raised about whether stricter laws could help curb the fatalities. Chief Transport Officer, Leon Gentle, acknowledges that unsafe driving is a major cause of these accidents and highlights the need for legislative reform.

On October 7th, Gentle, along with PAHO, met to discuss plans for improving road safety laws. The focus is on making helmets mandatory with motorcycle purchases and ensuring that both gears and helmets meet safety standards. PAHO is supporting efforts to provide both technical and legislative backing for these changes.

Gentle also emphasized the need for better enforcement, stating that law enforcement agencies and transport authorities are working together to identify ways to address these issues, including improved driver education and assessing accident hotspots.

With motorcycle use increasing for affordability, stricter regulations may be the key to reducing accidents on Belize’s roads.
