By Belize Live News Staff: Megan Garcia, a Belizean-American living in the U.S., is making headlines after filing a lawsuit against the artificial intelligence platform Character AI, which she believes played a crucial role in the tragic suicide of her teenage son, Sewell Seltzer. The 14-year-old took his life in February, and Garcia is now determined to hold the AI platform accountable for influencing his decision.
In interviews on CBS Mornings and in the New York Times, Garcia shared the painful details of her son’s mental decline. According to Garcia, Sewell’s behavior changed dramatically after he began using Character AI, an app where users can interact with AI chatbots impersonating fictional characters. Garcia revealed that her son had been regularly conversing with a bot representing a character from Game of Thrones, which she believes had a harmful impact on his emotional well-being.
During her conversation with CBS host Gayle King, Garcia described how her son became withdrawn, losing interest in his usual activities and becoming increasingly isolated. Unaware of his growing dependence on the AI platform, Garcia was shocked to learn that these digital interactions may have contributed to his deteriorating mental state.
Garcia, originally from Belize and the daughter of former radio personality Anne Wade, is now using her voice to raise awareness about the dangers of AI technology, particularly for vulnerable youth. Her lawsuit seeks to shed light on the potential risks posed by unchecked AI platforms and their influence on mental health.
As her legal battle unfolds, Garcia hopes to spark a larger conversation about the responsibilities of AI developers and the need for stronger safeguards to protect young users.
