Belize observes Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day, reaffirms commitment to protecting indigenous rights

By Belize Live News Staff: On this Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day, the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous People’s Affairs joins Belize and the global community in commemorating the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples. The theme for this year, “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact,” highlights the urgent need to safeguard the rights and territories of these communities, whose presence is vital to preserving biodiversity and cultural diversity.

Indigenous Peoples living in voluntary isolation and those in initial contact represent some of humanity’s most vulnerable and distinct groups. Their existence on ancestral lands is a powerful symbol of resilience and is key to the cultural richness of our world. These communities contribute to the protection of the planet by maintaining traditional practices that have been passed down for generations, helping to sustain the delicate balance of natural ecosystems.

In Belize, Indigenous Peoples, particularly the Garifuna and Maya, are integral to the nation’s cultural and environmental heritage. Their traditional knowledge plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, agriculture, eco-tourism, and sustainable economic practices. These contributions enhance Belize’s multicultural identity and help to preserve its natural ecosystems, which are vital to the country’s economy and biodiversity.

Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to protecting the rights and well-being of Belize’s Indigenous communities. In her address, she stated:

“As we commemorate Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day 2024, we honor the resilience of our Indigenous communities and recognize their invaluable contributions to our nation. The Ministry remains committed to protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, ensuring their voices are heard in every decision-making process and working with them to protect their rights. This is not only vital for their survival but essential to Belize’s environmental conservation and cultural richness.”

The Ministry also emphasizes the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with Indigenous communities to ensure their rights are upheld and that initiatives are implemented to protect their cultural and natural heritage for future generations. As we celebrate this day of resistance and resilience, Belize stands united in honoring its Indigenous Peoples and their profound role in shaping the nation’s identity and future.

Through continued partnership and advocacy, Belize is dedicated to advancing the rights and well-being of Indigenous Peoples, ensuring their contributions are acknowledged and celebrated for years to come.
