Madam Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman of Belize delivered an inspiring keynote address at the 2024 graduation ceremony of the Hugh Wooding Law School, held on October 5th at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The event celebrated the graduation of 213 students and was attended by distinguished guests, including Caribbean Court of Justice President Hon. Justice Adrian Saunders, Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago Hon. Ivor Archie, and other senior judicial officials.
In her address, Chief Justice Blenman urged the graduates to uphold the highest standards of integrity, dedication, and professionalism as they enter the legal profession. She emphasized the vital role that law plays in advancing justice and development across the Caribbean, encouraging the graduates to become advocates for positive societal change. Highlighting the region’s vast potential, Blenman called on the new generation of lawyers to unite in realizing the Caribbean’s aspirations of a strong, unified community.
The Chief Justice also challenged the graduates to contribute to the unique identity of the Caribbean and advocate for the pursuit of what she described as the “Caribbean Dream,” in contrast to the romanticized ideals of the “American Dream.” She reminded the graduates that the practice of law is a noble vocation capable of making a significant impact on society.
The Hugh Wooding Law School, one of the region’s leading institutions for legal education, plays a key role in shaping the next generation of legal professionals. This year, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a legacy of producing esteemed lawyers who have gone on to serve as presidents, prime ministers, and high-ranking officials across the Caribbean.
