Belize’s Firearms and Ammunition Control Board enhances regulatory systems with study visit to Jamaica

By Belize Live News Staff: The Firearms and Ammunition Control Board (FACB) of Belize recently completed an important study visit to the Jamaica Licensing Authority, from September 25-27, 2024, aimed at improving the country’s firearms licensing and regulatory procedures. This visit marks a significant step in Belize’s commitment to strengthening its firearms control systems, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and public safety.

The FACB delegation, which included members of the Board and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, participated in workshops, presentations, and site tours organized by the Jamaica Licensing Authority. The study visit provided in-depth insights into the successful operational strategies Jamaica has implemented in managing firearms licensing, regulatory compliance, and public safety measures.

Sharole Carr-Saldivar, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, and Chair of the FACB, emphasized the importance of the visit in advancing Belize’s regulatory framework: “Our visit to the Jamaica Licensing Authority has been instrumental in broadening our understanding of firearms management and control. We are committed to adopting best practices that will enhance Belize’s regulatory frameworks and contribute to improved public safety.”

Throughout the visit, the FACB team explored various aspects of firearms control, including data management, licensing protocols, and strategies to combat the illegal firearms trade. The goal is to implement the lessons learned in Jamaica to modernize Belize’s systems, enhancing safety, accountability, and transparency in firearms management.

This initiative aligns with the FACB’s dedication to upholding international commitments on firearms control, including compliance with the Caribbean Firearms Roadmap. By focusing on reducing the proliferation of illicit firearms and strengthening cooperation among Caribbean nations, Belize aims to play a pivotal role in promoting regional public safety.

The FACB looks forward to applying the knowledge gained during the visit to improve its operations and ensure that Belize continues to advance in its firearms management efforts.
