Belize Fisheries Department issues reminder on conch season regulations

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Fisheries Department has issued a reminder to the public about the regulations governing the country’s new conch season, which began on October 1, 2024, and will run through June 30, 2025.

The department warned that the season could close early if the conch production quota is met before the scheduled end date. The regulations, which fall under the Fisheries Resources Act, are aimed at ensuring sustainable harvesting of the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas), a key marine species in Belize.

Under the law, it is illegal to harvest, buy, sell, or possess conch during the closed season from July 1 to September 30. Restrictions are also in place on the size and weight of conch that can be taken or sold. Additionally, the sale or possession of diced conch meat is only permitted with a special license from the Fisheries Administrator. The export of conch must also comply with a quota system to prevent overharvesting.

The Fisheries Department urged the public to report any illegal fishing activities to the authorities as part of broader efforts to protect the country’s marine resources.

Sustainable management of conch populations is critical for Belize’s marine ecosystem, and the department called on the public to adhere to the regulations to ensure the species’ long-term survival.
