By Belize Live News Staff: At the United Nations General Assembly, Guatemala’s newly inaugurated President, Bernardo Arévalo, delivered a clear message of cooperation regarding the country’s ongoing territorial dispute with Belize. In his first address to the international community, President Arévalo reiterated Guatemala’s firm commitment to abiding by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, which is expected to bring a final resolution to the maritime and territorial issues between the neighboring nations.
Arévalo stressed that Guatemala would pursue a peaceful and lasting resolution to the dispute, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and legal frameworks in settling such matters. “Through dialogue and the use of international legal mechanisms, we are showing the world that peaceful solutions are not only possible but essential in maintaining regional stability,” he remarked.
The president’s statements highlight Guatemala’s evolving approach to the long-standing dispute, signaling a desire to move forward in alignment with international law and foster improved relations with Belize. Arévalo expressed confidence in the process, stating that the outcome would be just and respectful of both countries’ rights.

Belizean leadership is also actively engaged at the UN, with the Prime Minister having spoken at the Summit for the Future, and Belize’s Foreign Minister set to participate in the General Debate.
