Belize International Airport set for major upgrades after being ranked among Central America’s worst

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize International Airport has been identified as one of the worst airports in Central America, according to a recent article by Nicole Cord-Cruz on Islands. Known officially as Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, this travel hub has faced growing dissatisfaction from passengers due to long lines, cramped spaces, and minimal amenities. Many travelers have shared their frustrating experiences online, describing the airport as “grimy” and lacking sufficient food and drink options, while some have noted poor customer service.

In 2015, the airport ranked fourth on Sleeping in Airports’ list of the worst airports in the Caribbean and Central America, based on feedback from travelers who cited cleanliness issues and overcrowding as major concerns.

Despite Belize’s growing popularity as a premier tourist destination, especially for those seeking tropical getaways and eco-adventures, the airport’s reputation has become a recurring pain point for visitors.

There is, however, hope for improvement. In 2023, a major $30 million USD expansion project began to rehabilitate and expand the airport. This overhaul, announced by the Belize government, aims to address the long-standing complaints by improving customs and immigration areas, expanding restaurants and retail spaces, and implementing new security systems.

The plan doesn’t stop there. Prime Minister John Briceño has shared his vision under #PlanBelize, which includes further phases of development at Belize International Airport, costing nearly $94 million USD. These upgrades will introduce escalators, elevators, modern check-in facilities, and more, all aimed at boosting the airport’s capacity to handle a 300 percent increase in passenger traffic over the next 15 years.

For now, travelers may still encounter challenges, but with significant changes on the way, the Belize International Airport could soon transform into a much smoother and more enjoyable gateway to the country’s beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture.

Stay tuned for more updates on these changes as Belize continues to work towards a better travel experience.
