Violent attack in Guatemala’s Petén leaves eight dead, including child

By Belize Live News Staff: A violent attack in the northern region of Petén on Saturday left eight people dead, including seven adults and one child, according to Guatemalan authorities. The victims were traveling in a pickup truck near Santa Marta, El Naranjo, when they were ambushed.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. The attack took place at the intersection of Santa Rosita and San Andrés, a rural area often known for drug trafficking routes, though it is unknown if the incident is related to organized crime.

Guatemalan authorities are investigating the incident and have called for any witnesses to come forward with information.

The region has seen sporadic violence in recent years, as criminal groups vie for control over territory. However, the killings have left the community shocked, raising concerns about rising insecurity.

Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
