Inmate accused of high-end resort scams found dead in prison cell

By Belize Live News Staff: An inmate at the Belize Central Prison was found dead in his cell early this morning, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Christopher D’Angelo Alverado Marchena, a Costa Rican national who was remanded to prison in March 2024 on charges of obtaining property and services by deception. Marchena was accused of scamming luxury resorts in San Pedro and Placencia out of over $100,000 Belize dollars through elaborate schemes involving fabricated screenshots and promises of payment.

Prison authorities discovered Marchena’s lifeless body in his cell around 3:29 a.m. today. He shared the cell with four other inmates and had no known medical history. He had attended court the previous day and returned to his cell without incident.

The circumstances surrounding Marchena’s death remain unclear. His body was found lying face up, wearing boxers, with his face reportedly slightly swollen. An official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death.
