By Belize Live News Staff: Moses Shyne Barrow, the Leader of the Opposition, sounded the alarm over Belize’s rising crime rate and increasing incidents of police brutality in his State of the Nation address.
Barrow claimed that murder rates have surged by 40% in 2024, citing the recent murder of a mother and daughter in Corozal and other high-profile cases. He also condemned police brutality, referencing the deaths of Daniel Caal and Derick Uh, who he alleged died due to police negligence.
“The lawlessness in our nation has reached alarming levels. People do not feel safe because they are not safe,” Barrow said. He accused the police force of being corrupt and ineffective, a situation worsened by what he described as political interference in law enforcement.
Barrow pledged that a future UDP government would depoliticize the police force, boost law enforcement morale, and implement meaningful reforms to restore confidence in the justice system.
