By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is demanding an apology from Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich after his controversial remarks regarding the Tenth of September celebrations. Cawich stated that no official ceremonies or parades would be held in Belmopan for the commemoration of the Battle of St. George’s Caye, as “the Tenth is an event more for the caye itself.” He further suggested that Belmopan residents should celebrate in Belize City instead.
The UDP has condemned the mayor’s comments, accusing him of disrespecting Belizean history and patriotism. The party highlighted what it sees as a continued disregard by the current government, led by the People’s United Party (PUP), towards the significance of the Tenth of September. They claim the government has cut funding for key events such as the Queen of the Bay pageant, Tenth Parade, and Bram, making it difficult for municipalities to organize celebrations.
The UDP emphasized that the Tenth of September is not a political holiday but a day of national pride that honors the memory of the Battle of St. George’s Caye and those who fought to defend Belize. The party also pointed out that while millions of dollars have been spent on concerts to boost tourism, the government has seemingly neglected the Tenth, further calling it a “disgraceful” decision.
In light of the public backlash, the UDP is calling on Mayor Cawich to retract his statement and offer an apology to the Belizean people for what they describe as an “ignorant and immature” attitude towards such an important historical commemoration.
