By Belize Live News Staff: A four-year-old child in Belize has been barred from registering for school after the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) refused to release her birth records due to an unpaid $500 medical bill, according to a relative.
The incident has drawn outrage from community members, who say the practice disproportionately impacts low-income families and denies children their right to education. Without birth records, school enrollment is not possible, leaving the child’s future in limbo.
“This issue was discussed years ago, and it was agreed that birth records could not be withheld because of unpaid hospital bills,” the family member told Belize Live News, expressing frustration over the hospital’s refusal to release the necessary documentation.
The case is seen as part of a larger problem affecting marginalized groups in Belize. Advocates argue that such policies contradict the country’s efforts to meet its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5, which aims to promote gender equality and empower women and girls.
“We can’t claim to be working toward a better future for our children, especially our girls, when their basic rights are still being denied,” the relative said.
KHMH has yet to comment on the situation, and it remains unclear how many other families may be affected by the policy.
