By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance of Belize has initiated a project to provide solar energy kits to fishermen in Stann Creek, aiming to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainability in the region. The initiative is part of a broader government effort to improve livelihoods in fishing communities while aligning with global environmental standards.
The solar kits, which include high-efficiency solar panels, batteries, and energy-efficient lighting systems, are expected to transform the way local fishermen operate. By using solar power, the fishermen will be able to reduce their energy costs, relying less on traditional diesel generators and cutting down on carbon emissions. This shift is intended to enhance both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.
The project, which saw the distribution of 100 solar kits in Dangriga Town earlier today, also provides training for the fishermen, ensuring they can effectively use the new equipment to improve their daily operations. With solar-powered lighting, fishermen will also benefit from enhanced visibility during nighttime fishing, improving safety conditions.
The Ministry emphasized that this project is a significant step towards supporting local communities with innovative, eco-friendly solutions. By reducing operational costs, the solar kits are expected to foster economic growth, allowing fishermen to reinvest savings back into their businesses. The government expressed confidence that this initiative will contribute to long-term economic resilience and environmental sustainability in Stann Creek.
The initiative has been made possible with funding from the European Union through the Lait Up Belize Technical Assistance Project. The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance has expressed its appreciation for the EU’s support and looks forward to seeing the positive impact of the project on local communities.
