Belize grants permanent residency to seven refugees

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has granted permanent residency to seven refugees under its Amnesty Program, a joint initiative with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to regularize undocumented immigrants.

The move comes shortly after the opening of a new refugee asylum center and highlights Belize’s compassionate approach to the global displacement crisis.

“These permanent resident cards represent your enduring hope for a better future in this country,” Tanya Santos, CEO of the Ministry of Immigration, told the new residents at a ceremony.

Jose Samaniego, UNHCR Regional Director for the Americas, highlighted the scale of the crisis, with over 23 million forcibly displaced people in the Americas alone.

The Amnesty Program offers safety and protection to those fleeing persecution, aligning with Belize’s commitment to a “safe society, justice for all and family well-being,” Santos said.
