American firefighter claims self-defense in Belize stabbing incident

By Belize Live News Staff: Gilbert Lightburn, a 41-year-old American firefighter from Los Angeles, California, finds himself facing serious charges following a violent altercation at Shisha Bar in Belize City. Accused of attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm, Lightburn maintains his innocence, claiming he acted in self-defense.

The incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, left four men hospitalized with stab wounds. Two of the victims, Javon Abraham and Mark Usher, remain in the hospital with serious injuries, including collapsed lungs.

Lightburn appeared in court on Monday without legal representation, asserting, “I understand it, but I never attempted to murder anyone, I was defending myself.”

The magistrate advised him to seek legal counsel and apply for bail through the High Court.

Police investigations suggest Lightburn initiated the altercation by stabbing Abraham inside the bar. The conflict escalated outside, resulting in three additional men being injured.

Security measures at the bar are under scrutiny, as Lightburn reportedly entered the establishment with a knife undetected.

Lightburn remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance on October 30th.
