BEL begins critical marine survey for submarine cable installation between San Pedro and Caye Caulker

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has announced the initiation of a crucial marine survey in the waters between San Pedro and Caye Caulker, marking a considerable milestone in the 7th Power Project. This project aims to install a 34.5 kV submarine cable that will interconnect the two islands, enhancing the electricity infrastructure and ensuring a more reliable power supply. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The marine survey, which began recently, is being conducted by two specialized vessels, the “Sea Date” and the “Lazy Pelican.” These vessels are outfitted with advanced data collection equipment and are supported by teams of divers actively working in the waters. The survey operations are anticipated to wrap up by Thursday, September 5, 2024.

BEL has issued an important notice to all mariners, boaters, and divers in the vicinity of the survey area, urging them to keep a safe distance from the vessels. This precaution is vital to ensure the safety of BEL’s technicians and divers and to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the data being gathered.

The company has extended its gratitude to the public for their cooperation and understanding during this essential phase of the project. BEL also acknowledges the potential inconveniences caused by these activities and sincerely apologizes for any disruptions.

For more information, BEL invites the public to reach out via their toll-free numbers, 0-800-BEL-CARE or 0-800-235-2273, for updates and inquiries.
