Belize's shrimp industry on the rebound, eyes significant growth

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s shrimp industry, once a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, is showing promising signs of recovery after facing years of challenges. Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai recently shared encouraging news at the Ministry’s Annual General Meeting, highlighting the industry’s steady progress.

Production figures have been on the rise, reaching 1,763,000 pounds in 2023, a marked improvement from the low point of 1,020,000 pounds in 2020. This positive trend is largely attributed to the adoption of new and innovative technologies within the industry.

Furthermore, the reopening of the Mexican export market and potential opportunities in Taiwan have injected renewed optimism into the sector. Minister Mai expressed confidence that with continued advancements and access to these markets, the shrimp industry is on track for significant growth in the near future.

The industry faced a major setback in 2014 due to Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) and the subsequent closure of the Mexican market. However, through diligent negotiations, Belize has regained access to this vital export destination.

Despite lower production in 2020, exports remained relatively strong due to favorable prices. While exports dipped in 2021 and 2022, they rebounded impressively in 2023 with a 65% increase in volume and improved prices, generating $2.888 million in revenue.

Minister Mai’s optimism for the shrimp industry’s future reflects the positive impact of technological innovation and expanded market access. With continued efforts and strategic investments, the industry is poised to reclaim its position as a key contributor to Belize’s economic growth and agricultural resilience.
