By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities (BAPDA) is applauding the recent introduction of electric buses in Belize City as a major victory for accessibility and inclusion. This development, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), addresses long-standing concerns about the city’s public transportation system, particularly for Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
For years, BAPDA has campaigned tirelessly for improved public services that meet the needs of PWDs. The organization has consistently drawn attention to the inadequacies of Belize’s bus fleet, which largely failed to accommodate those with mobility challenges. Despite repeated calls for change, resistance from bus operators and local authorities left many PWDs without reliable and accessible transportation options.
The launch of the new e-buses under the UNDP initiative signifies a turning point. These buses are not only safer and more environmentally friendly but also designed with accessibility in mind. BAPDA has expressed its appreciation for this progress, noting that while some minor issues remain, the e-buses are already having a positive impact. The nominal cost of transportation for PWDs ensures they can now travel across the city without facing financial barriers, a key goal BAPDA has long advocated for.
BAPDA acknowledges that challenges persist. Despite the successful implementation of the e-buses, there has been pushback from some quarters, with legal challenges and injunctions threatening to derail the progress made. However, BAPDA remains steadfast in its support for the initiative, working closely with the UNDP, Belize City Council, and other stakeholders to ensure that these advancements are not only preserved but expanded to other districts in the future.
This initiative is seen as a crucial step forward after years of PWDs being overlooked in national development plans. BAPDA is committed to ensuring that transportation remains inclusive and accessible, and they are prepared to oppose any attempts to roll back these gains.
