Shark attack victim survives, Minister criticizes media response

By Belize Live News Staff: A teenage tourist survived a shark attack in Belizean waters, leaving the nation stunned. The incident occurred at Half Moon Caye involving 15-year-old Sofia Carlson.

Minister of the Blue Economy, Andre Perez, expressed concern for the victim’s well-being, stating that this is a rare occurrence and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the attack. Perez emphasized that this incident should not deter people from enjoying Belize’s waters.

The Belize Dive Pro company out of San Pedro was leading a dive trip when Carlson was attacked after jumping into the water. She was rescued and airlifted to the Coast Guard FOB for medical attention.

Graphic photos of Carlson being stretchered away were circulated online, drawing strong criticism from Minister Perez, who condemned the insensitive actions of certain media members. He stressed the importance of responsible reporting, especially considering the impact on the victim’s family.
