Indian businessman in Belize City accused of human trafficking

By Belize Live New Staff: An Indian businessman in Belize, Harish Kishanchand, was arraigned on charges of human trafficking after a former employee alleged forced labor. The victim, a 21-year-old Indian man, told police that he was lured to Belize with promises of a good salary, accommodation, and a work permit. However, he was allegedly forced to work seven days a week, had his passport confiscated, and was not allowed to leave the premises unsupervised.

Kishanchand, the owner of two businesses, “Chic” and “Harry’s Imports,” appeared in court with his attorney. He was granted bail under strict conditions, including surrendering his travel documents. The next court date is scheduled for September 30, 2024.
