Former Belize City Councilor Deannie Requena survives violent attack on George Price Highway

By Belize Live News Staff: In a harrowing incident on the afternoon of August 4th 2024, former Belize City Councilor Deannie Requena was violently attacked and left for dead on the George Price Highway near Hattieville Village. Requena, who was found suffering from multiple stab wounds, was rescued by a passerby who immediately rushed her to the Hattieville Police Station. She was subsequently transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) for further treatment.

The attack occurred just after 1:30 p.m. when Requena was discovered near the mile 15 police booth. The Good Samaritan, whose identity remains unknown, played a crucial role in saving Requena’s life by providing timely assistance and ensuring she received immediate medical care.

In a heartfelt social media post, Requena expressed her gratitude to the gentleman and his young child who stopped to assist her during her time of need. “I didn’t manage to get his name, but I am thankful,” she wrote. Despite the physical injuries, which included multiple stab wounds to her face and neck, Requena highlighted the severe mental toll the attack has taken on her.

“They say God gives his strongest soldiers the hardest fight,” Requena shared. “Sometimes I accept the lessons and learn from them, but this one is way too much for me mentally.” She emphasized her efforts to remain calm for the sake of her child while coping with the traumatic experience.

Requena revealed that the attackers were not strangers to her and acknowledged her previously private life, which has now been thrust into the public eye due to the severity of the crime. According to her statement, an official report was filed with the Belize Police Department, and the assailants have been caught. “We are now waiting for them to be charged to the fullest extent,” she stated.

The former councilor recounted the brutal details of the attack: one assailant was stabbing and punching her while the other was breaking multiple windows on her vehicle and slashing the tires. The attackers stole $3,000 in cash and her iPhone. At one point, a weapon was pointed at her, adding to the terrifying ordeal.

Despite the trauma, she conveyed her gratitude for being alive and the support she has received from the community.

As the investigation continues, authorities are seeking a person of interest for questioning. The community remains hopeful for a resolution to the case and stands in solidarity Requena during this challenging time.
