By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, particularly in the Belize District, according to the Ministry of Health and Wellness. This rise mirrors a global trend of increased infections, prompting health officials to urge vigilance and preventive measures.
Dr. Russell Manzanero, Director of Epidemiology, noted that the true extent of the outbreak may be masked due to underreporting. He emphasized the importance of testing to accurately gauge the situation. The increased movement of people, especially in the Belize District – a hub for tourism – has contributed to the spread of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.
While most cases have been mild, some individuals have required hospitalization. The elderly and other vulnerable groups remain at higher risk for severe illness. Dr. Manzanero stressed the importance of vaccination against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV to protect these populations.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages the public to practice good hygiene, get vaccinated, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
