By Belize Live News Staff: Caryl Meighan, a 61-year-old Belizean, has been given a new lease on life thanks to successful heart surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
Meighan was diagnosed with a mitral valve issue ten months ago and was initially hesitant about the procedure, having lost his brother to a similar surgery. However, he was inspired by another KHMH patient who had successfully recovered, leading him to undergo the operation in June.
Anesthesiologist Lydia Blake led the complex surgery and recounted the challenges faced during the procedure. Despite these challenges, the surgery was a success, highlighting the skill and dedication of the KHMH staff.
Dr. Adrian Coye, a cardiologist at KHMH, emphasized the importance of Meighan receiving care in Belize, close to his family’s support.
Meighan is currently recovering but is eager to return to work, highlighting the positive impact of KHMH’s expertise and care. His story is an inspiring example of the power of resilience and the importance of accessible medical care in Belize.
