By Belize Live New Staff: A peaceful wake turned into a scene of violence early Saturday morning, leaving 23-year-old fisherman RayShawn Middleton fighting for his life in the hospital.
Around 1:25 AM, Dangriga Police rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital after reports of a shooting in the Benguche Area. They found Middleton, a resident of 1 PineApple Road, suffering from three gunshot wounds – two in the abdomen and one in the back. The severity of his injuries necessitated immediate transfer to the Western Regional Hospital for emergency surgery.
Initial investigations reveal that Middleton had attended a wake with two friends, Devin Bermudez, 19, and Aaron Estero, 17. A confrontation erupted when two individuals, known only as Roy and Ninja, accosted Bermudez while he was seated on his motorcycle. Roy allegedly punched Bermudez, prompting him to flee and leave his motorcycle behind.
The situation escalated when Roy and Ninja returned with their cousin, Nolberto Smith, and attempted to take the motorcycle. When Middleton intervened to stop them, Smith allegedly opened fire, critically injuring him.
The suspects quickly fled the scene, leaving Middleton to be transported to the hospital by a friend. Police have launched a full investigation, recording witness statements and canvassing the area for clues. They have identified several persons of interest.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
