By Belize Live News Staff: A Canadian couple was rescued Saturday evening after becoming trapped amidst surging rapids in a popular tourist destination in Belize.
The incident unfolded in the picturesque Rio On Pools, located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, when a sudden surge in water levels left the tourists stranded on a rock in the middle of the river.
Emergency services, including the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and specialized rescue teams, were quickly dispatched to the scene. The couple was provided with life vests, enabling them to swim to a nearby rock closer to the riverbank.
Under the cover of darkness, the rescue teams successfully reached the stranded tourists, bringing them safely ashore shortly before 9 PM local time. The couple is reported to be unharmed and grateful for the swift response of rescuers.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural environments and the importance of caution when enjoying outdoor activities.
