By Belize Live News Staff: Belize experienced a concerning surge in violence in June, with 10 reported murders bringing the year’s projected total to 57. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the historically low numbers recorded in the same period last year.
Police Commissioner Chester Williams acknowledged the uptick in crime, stating that while the numbers are comparable to 2021 and 2022, the police force is committed to implementing strategies to curb violence. These strategies include targeted operations and specialized units aimed at addressing specific crime hotspots across the country.
The murders in June included several instances of robbery-related homicides, targeted attacks, and fatal incidents stemming from domestic disputes. The victims ranged from shopkeepers to security guards and innocent bystanders.
Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa expressed concern over the escalating violence and emphasized the government’s dedication to restoring the downward trend in homicides observed last year. He highlighted the implementation of various measures, including increased police presence, targeted operations, and enhanced investigative techniques.
Prime Minister John Briceno, while acknowledging the concerning figures, maintained that Belize remains as safe as any city in the U.S. or U.K. He pointed to the government’s significant investments in technology, DNA analysis, and police training as key factors in apprehending criminals and solving crimes.
The recent wave of violence has sparked public concern and calls for increased action from authorities. The government and law enforcement agencies have pledged to intensify their efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
