Security guard charged with theft of police officer's cellphone

By Belize Live News Staff: A 50-year-old security guard, Martin Carcamo, who is employed at the Michael Finnegan Market, was arraigned in court on Tuesday on a charge of theft. The charge stems from an incident that occurred on Monday morning at the market.

According to police reports, a female police officer visited the market around 6:30 AM to purchase food. While having breakfast, she placed her black iPhone 12 on the counter and sat next to it. Shortly thereafter, a man approached the stall and allegedly swiped her phone.

The officer noticed her phone was missing and confronted the man, but he denied taking it. He walked away, but she followed him, identifying herself as a police officer. At this point, the man reportedly returned the phone and the officer filed a report.

In court, Carcamo pleaded not guilty to the theft charge. The court offered him bail in the amount of $1,200 plus one surety of the same amount, to which there was no objection.
