By Belize Live News Staff: The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a scathing statement criticizing the Ministers of Health and Police for their handling of a recent security incident at the San Ignacio Community Hospital.
In a press release dated June 11, 2024, the UDP expressed outrage at what it called a “reactive and apologetic approach” by the government in response to the incident. The party argued that this approach has contributed to the “continued deterioration” of the healthcare system under the current Minister of Health & Wellness.
The UDP emphasized that the Ministry of Health and Wellness has a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all government hospitals, including the San Ignacio Community Hospital. The party highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming environment for staff, visitors, and most importantly, patients.
The UDP outlined specific security protocols that it believes the Ministry should have in place, including procedures for addressing unstable patients, conflicts with patients and family members, disgruntled employees, and other security threats. The party asserted that these are basic protocols that should have been implemented from the outset of the Minister’s tenure.
The UDP further criticized a recent statement by a representative of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, which made no reference to security protocols at the San Ignacio Community Hospital. The party argued that this omission demonstrates a lack of awareness and preparedness on the part of the Ministry.
The UDP concluded its statement by calling for the resignation of the Minister of Health and Wellness, citing a “long list of blunders” and failures to execute key plans and strategies. The party emphasized that this latest incident is just another example of the Minister’s incompetence and the overall deterioration of the healthcare system.
