By Belize Live News Staff: Tragedy struck a remote Belizean village today when a beloved tapir, the country’s national animal, was fatally struck by a vehicle on a busy road. The heartbreaking incident has reignited concerns about the growing dangers facing the nation’s precious wildlife.
A bystander who witnessed the accident quickly alerted authorities, and Rafael Choc, a tourism officer with the Belize Audubon Society, rushed to the scene alongside local police, traffic officers, and workers from nearby businesses. Together, they carefully removed the tapir’s body and ensured it received a respectful burial.
Tapirs, gentle giants with a prehensile snout, are iconic symbols of Belize’s rich biodiversity. The loss of this individual has deeply saddened the community and serves as a reminder of the challenges these creatures face, particularly from increasing road traffic and habitat loss.
“It’s a devastating loss,” a bystander told Belize Live News. “Tapirs are not just animals to us; they’re a part of our national identity. We need to do more to protect them.”
The Belize Audubon Society is calling for greater awareness among drivers in areas known for wildlife crossings. They also emphasize the need for continued efforts to protect Belize’s unique ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them.
