By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has successfully restored power to communities in the Orange Walk and Corozal districts following an extended outage on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024.
The outage, lasting from 12:23 p.m. to 11:08 p.m., was caused by damage to the main transformer at the Orange Walk substation during severe lightning storms. This substation serves a wide area, including communities from Yo Creek to Blue Creek, and several others in the region.
Once the weather cleared, BEL’s team acted swiftly to replace the damaged transformer, enabling the restoration of power to all affected areas.
BEL acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the outage and remains committed to providing safe and reliable service. They urge the public to report any hazards or damages to the power system by calling 0-800-BEL-CARE / 0-800-235-2273.
The company also emphasizes the challenges posed by increasingly unstable weather conditions, linked to climate change, which can strain the national power grid and cause intermittent outages. BEL’s protective devices are designed to activate in such situations to safeguard and stabilize the power system.
